We are looking for new visual approaches towards the contemporary city.The program will be first shown at Directors Lounge, Berlin, February2008. Experimental, documentary, essay, interactive and multi-channel,all welcome. Please send in preview DVD of your work. Early deadline Dec. 18, 2007 (postmarked), late entry deadline Jan. 5 (only if you have sent a previous notice!)

Urban Research
The common image of urbanity stays within the traditional iconography,and encompasses an outdated model of ³the city². Mass media reproduceit and tourists (want to) affirm it on their ³city tours² around theglobe. In contrast, city centres and public spaces have lost theirtraditional function. Even efforts of urban renewal of centres conceptually not much different to the ³City Beautiful² movement at theend of the 19th century do not help to conserve life of ³old towns.²These efforts may even accelerate the described changes.
On the other hand in mass media, there is little depiction of the life,the architecture, of the beauty and the issues of the contemporaryurban scapes. There is a lack of positive images of the contemporarycity as it has grown until today. There even is the notion of the citybeing ³unreadable² (T. Sieverts). The common terms are reflecting thesenegative views of the environment most people live in: ³sprawl², ³edgecity², ³in-between city² (Zwischenstadt), or ³informal city².
Many artists thus have taken up to newly explore and visually researchthe ³unknown², the ³informal² city. There is exciting new work, whichtries to create a different, a differentiated image of space,architecture and life within the contemporary city. Unlike modernist³city symphonies,² these new works are based on exploration, onresearch and on discourse. The artists often focus on particularaspects rather than trying to depict the city as a whole. UrbanResearch comprises experimental, documentary and animated worksbringing together complementary views of urban life.
Urban Research 2008 will firstly be presented at the media art festivalDirectors Lounge in February 2008. So far, the selections of UrbanResearch have been widely shown in venues in London, Poznan,Dordrecht/Rotterdam, Freiburg, Essen and Berlin.
